- 9202/05 Graven Imagery, Toronto - StuffIt 2.0 External Encryptors
-
- The enclosed folder, "Encryptors", contains two external encryption modules
- (DESex and NewDEx) for "StuffIt Deluxe™" V2.01. They perform the same way
- the Aladdin external encryptor (PassLock) does, except there's no "About"
- dialogue. I never was much of a Mac programmer.
-
- The modules are NOT interoperable with the internal encryption provided
- by the domestic (North American) version of SD2. This was seen as a
- a design feature. Oh well. What it means is that both ends of the line
- each need to have a copy of the appropriate external in order to use it to
- communicate securely.
-
- NOTE: These modules are not supplied by or on behalf of Aladdin Systems, publishers of "StuffIt Deluxe™". They are not supported by Aladdin Systems.
- These modules are copyright 1992 by Richard Outerbridge, but may be freely distributed subject to the restrictions noted below.

-
- HOW TO INSTALL
-
- Create a folder named "Encryptors" in your System Folder, and put the
- external modules into it. Relaunch StuffIt Deluxe. Voila! As with
- Aladdin's "PassLock" module, "StuffIt Classic™" should be able to use
- these modules to decrypt (but not to encrypt).

- TECHNICAL NOTES
-
- NewDEx was something that was mooted about at the time Deluxe was on the
- drawing boards, but I never got around to putting it together. How time
- flies. It carries an "official" Aladdin-assigned external encryptor number,
- namely "515". The biggest discouragement was discovering that Deluxe had
- been written to explicitly prevent external encryptors from interoperating
- with the internal routines, as a half-baked sop to US export rules. DESex
- was about 20 minutes more work, so why not? It carries a self-appropriated
- 3rd-party resource ID of 576. Both of them work pretty much the same way
- as their internal counterparts after they get going, but I can't vouch for
- how their key storage is managed/performed within/by Deluxe.
